During the Q3 2025 earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed the company's plan to utilize its fleet of idle Tesla vehicles to create a massive distributed AI inference network. The goal is to transform 100 million vehicles into enormous computing assets, providing a combined distributed computing capacity of approximately 100 GW (gigawatts). He explained that each vehicle would have approximately 1 kilowatt of AI inference capability, while the vehicles' energy and cooling issues would be self-sufficient, forming a global supercomputer.

This concept is similar to traditional distributed computing platforms, such as SETI@home, which leverage idle computing resources to drive large-scale computations. However, Elon Musk also acknowledged that users might worry about the impact on power consumption and hardware lifespan when vehicles are used as computing resources. Therefore, Tesla needs to provide sufficient incentives for car owners to participate.
